I recommend the 8" model, based on your son's size. The 9" is a bit softer, if that's what he prefers.
The mattress comes with a 6" Dunlop Latex core...Dunlop being more dense is better for support.
The top 2" or 3" layer it Talalay Latex...a bit more supple and better for surface comfort.

As you can see, the prices are much higher.
Unlike the 100% all natural latex used in the EverEden models, these Pure Talalay Bliss mattresses are 30% natural latex and 70% synthetic latex.
Synthetic latex insures a consistent result, where the all natural EverEden varies a little from batch to batch.
Also, synthetic latex isn't quite as durable at natural latex.

Another concern I have is for the source of his back pain.
If he suffers from work related muscle strain, these latex mattresses are ideal.
However, if any of is back pain stems from disc problems, i.e. degenerative, bulging or herniated discs, then there's a better choice.
The best support for that type of back pain, is a coiled mattress that's upholstered with latex.
The coils push back against the spine, providing much better support for worn or damaged discs.
