Hi Pete,
My husband and I purchased a Sealy Posturpedic extra plush California king size mattress, a few years ago.
We are now experiencing back pain because of the significant body impressions. We are in the market for a new set.
We were sold on the softness and comfort that the mattress offered in the showroom.
My husband is 6'5 and 220. I am 5'4 and 145. We are both side sleepers, primarily.
Can you recommend a sleep system that will not wear out so quickly and provide the softness we like?
Thank you for your willingness to answer the question.
Karen
Hi Karen,
While you may have enjoyed the plushness of that mattress when it was new, this is typical of how softer mattresses wear, not to mention the toll it takes on you physically.
Salespeople love to push these extra plush mattresses, because they are easy to sell. I have yet to meet one, who gave a hoot about the durability.
There is a way to get what you want. The most resilient material available is latex. Latex has been the best upholstery available since the 1920s.
Conversely, the worst upholstery material ever invented is memory foam, which is what you have in your mattress....which is why it failed so easily.
Start with a reasonably firm mattress...one that will provide longer lasting firmer support...adding to that, a 2" layer of soft Talalay Latex.
The combination is a long term solution to getting what you want and having it stay that way.
The mattress we have recommended for a large man, of which we have sold many without complaint, is the Simmons Beautyrest Black Desiree in Luxury Firm.
Here are links to that mattress and to the latex toppers. The combination can't be beat.

The two things to avoid are: pillowtops and memory foam.
Both add to the initial comfort, for the easy sale, while reducing longevity....for the additional sales.
Over the years, recommending the firm mattress/latex topper combination, I've had many people complain that they shouldn't have to buy a latex topper with a new mattress.
My response has been, "If the mattresses were better made, you wouldn't have to".
It's the pervasive use of memory foam among the major name brands, that has made the latex topper a necessary part of the purchase.
However, those cries from so many have not gone unheard.
We have scoured the trade shows for high quality alternatives....and we have found some.
That would be the Natura Greenspring...using a stronger pocketed coil and upholstered with natural Talalay latex...no need for a separate topper.
The Liberty Plush Eurotop is the most comfortable of the 5 models they offer...shown here:

We've had this mattress for a year, now. It shows not the slightest signs of wear and we are getting the best support and comfort of any mattress we've previously tested.
High quality mattresses that are upholstered with latex and contain no memory foam, are hard to find in store.
And while a mattress, like this, requires a leap of faith...you can't go wrong.
We have sold many and with no complaints.
