Pocketed Springs vs. Open Coil Mattresses

Hi Peter,

Terribly sorry to bother you again, but I have a question I wondered if you had a view on.
I've been thinking that open coil mattresses might provide a type of full body support (because the springs are interlocked in a more fundamental way ),
which is not provided by pocket sprung mattresses?
Of course, pocket sprung mattresses are portrayed by the shops as the better by far, which could confuse the individual,
Thanks, Gavin from The UK

Hi Gavin,
No bother.
Both coil units were introduced in the 1920s.
Classifying either as far better than the other, implies that:
1) You simply don't know what you're talking about
or,
2) Want to sell what you want to sell, as opposed to what the customer needs
Frankly, I think you should shop other stores.

Each unit has its pros & cons.
The plus of the open coil, is its strength and durability.
It's the unit I take customers to when:
1) They are carrying a lot of body weight
2) When they have disc problems with their backs

Note: Disc problems come in a varying degree of severity.
There is a balance to be considered, when dealing with average or lighter weight people  who have disc problems.
Pocketed Coil

Open Coil

A lighter person with severe disc problems should use an open coil.
The more rigid support of the open coil is better for disc related back pain.
If the disc problems are minor and the body weight isn't heavy, a pocketed coil can work well.

The plus of the pocketed coil is in the contouring support it provides, which maintains the natural alignment of the spine...decidedly more comfortable than the open coil, but not as durable.
Most people are happier with the feel this type of support provides.

Note: Not all pocketed coils are alike. Recently, some manufacturers have taken an hourglass
shaped open coil and simply wrapped it...heat sealing the pockets at the top and bottom.
A true, original, pocketed coil that actually provides the beneficial contouring support necessary,
Is a barrel shaped coil that is taller than the pocket, pre-compressed into the pocket, and those pocketed are heat sealed in the center, so that each coil actually moves independently from the others.

I hope that helps you.

Thanks, Pete
