Simmons Beautyrest Black or a Two Sided Mattress?

Hi Pete:
So happy to find your blog. My husband and I are average weight people. We just bought a Simmons Beautyrest Black Edenton mattress (pending delivery) and have two questions: 
1) I thought I read somewhere that it was recently improved. If so, how? I'm particularly interested in what anti-sagging changes might have been engineered into the new design.
2) Is it flippable? It would be nice to know that if there is a hint of sagging, we could extend its life by flipping it and topping it with a latex pad as you suggest. 

And with a flippable mattresses, how often do you suggest they be flipped?

Hi Missy,

Well first off, there is no real difference between today's Black models and the previous Black line. That's just a sales pitch.

And while the padding is designed to resist body impressions, it only does a better job of that than other name brands.

To give the impression that it prevents body impressions is misleading.

My wife and I have the Ansleigh at home...an older model equivalent.

We added a latex topper to it for more comfort and greater longevity....but now, after 4 years, even though it still sleeps well, and even though the body impressions are slight, they make it difficult to meet in the middle. So, we have ordered a new all latex mattress for ourselves. Unlike you and your husband, we are not average weight people and our extra pounds have taken their toll enough to prompt use to buy a new mattress.

If you are continuing with your purchase, I'd suggest adding a 2" layer of latex foam to provide surface comfort that lasts a lot longer than the foams used in that mattress. It will also extend the life of the mattress and retard the development of body impressions.

The optimum way to care for a two sided mattress:

For the first year, flip it once a month....once a season (4 times a year) thereafter.

Alternate flipping....side to side, then head to foot. All this allows the mattress to settle and wear evenly.
