Numb and Sore Body Parts - Mattress or Latex Topper?

Brenda writes:

Hello Pete,
First off, thank you for providing this informative website and sharing your expertise.  It is so refreshing to have someone shoot it to you straight and not try to upsell you to a more expensive, lesser quality product.
We really could use your expertise in our situation.  My husband is 5'10" 220#, predominantly a back sleeper and I am 5'7" 160# and prefer to sleep on my side.   We currently sleep toss and turn on a 2001 Simmons firm double-sided mattress.  We wake most mornings with numb arms and fingers and sore hips and shoulders.  My husband no longer wants the bed to feel like a stone slab and I want to feel like I am sleeping on fluffy clouds!
We would greatly appreciate your recommendation on whether to (1) keep our 15 year old mattress and just purchase the latex topper (2) purchase one of the Simmons Beautyrest mattresses with a latex topper or (3) purchase one of the Natura Greenspring mattresses.  If the latter two are recommended, which of the brand’s models would work best with our body weights and sleeping positions?
Thanks so much for your assistance!
Brenda

Hi Brenda,
If all that is wrong with your mattress, is that it is too firm, then all you need a soft layer of latex to give you a comfortable sleeping surface.
A two-sided Simmons Beautyrest must be, at least, 15 years old. I can tell you right now, that there is nothing made by Simmons today, that is anywhere near that same level of quality.
If your mattress is in good condition and simply too firm, it would be a huge mistake to replace it.
A 2" layer of soft Talalay latex will last for many years and comes in a very nice zippered on cover with corner straps to anchor it to the mattress.
While comfortable, it doesn't quite provide a "Cloud Like" feel.
For that, you will want to add a feather or alternative down pillow topper. This kind of luxury is not a carefree product, like the latex topper that you just set and forget.
The down toppers, even the synthetic down, will require shaking to fluff it up.
It's a cinch that you don't have a chambermaid to do that for you, so you may want to reconsider that kind of extreme feel.
My suggestion would be to go with the latex topper first. You may, very well, find that it is plenty comfy all on it's own.
You can always order the feather or alternative down pillow topper if you feel you need to.
