New Mattress or a Latex Topper for the one we have?

Hi Pete,
You recently helped us pick out a mattress for our 3 year old...now I'm contacting you for some help with our own mattress issues.
In July 2010, we purchased a King size Stearns and Foster Estate Collection Eureka Springs Luxury Firm mattress (tight top).  I have various lower back injuries, including spondy, and my wife Emilie suffers from neck and hip pain sleeping on this mattress.  Neither of us sleep well on the mattress and are frustrated with the purchase (and the fact that it has had body indentation since day 1).  We are both side (or stomach) sleepers and are average/below average in size (5'10" 160lbs and 5'5" 115lbs).  We both use pillows between legs (when on side) and under hips (when on stomach) to minimize our pain while sleeping.
We would prefer not to purchase an entirely new mattress if we can avoid it and instead are considering purchasing a 2" Talalay Latex Topper and one of the latex pillows you advertise on your site.  Do you think that might solve some of our current sleeping issues or do we need to cut our losses and move forward with the purchase of a Simmons BeautyRest Recharge World Class Collection Santorini Luxury Firm (formerly Annapolis Place)?
Any guidance you can offer will help and is greatly appreciated.
Take care, BJ

Hi BJ,
The Eureka Springs was one of Macy's best sellers at the time.
It was the memory foam in that mattress that made the sale, and the reason why you've been unhappy with it all along.
Even when recommending a S&F model with no memory foam, we recommended using a latex topper with it...to extend the life of the mattress and add long lasting comfort.
The time to add the topper would have been when it was new....so that you would not now have the issues you're facing.

If getting a Simmons Beautyrest, the recommendation would be the same...adding a latex topper.
That being said, it makes sense to get the topper first, in hopes that it works with your mattress, delaying the purchase of a new mattress.
If not, nothing is lost. You'll use the topper on the new mattress.
However, I believe you will have more success in this by first flipping the mattress over and adding the topper to the underside.
This will improve the support your spine will be getting, as well as providing comfort.
The topper to get is the 2" soft Talalay, shown here:

Thanks, Pete
