Hi Mark,
It's rather disingenuous of Serta to make a two-sided mattress and not put any quality into it...given that was surly the assumption you had when you bought it.
Serta now and for the 30 some years I've been in this business, has made a third rate product. And, that would be true of everything they make at any price point.
If you would like a two-sided mattress that is high quality, I had them made. They've been on the market for 5 years now and enjoy a 100% satisfaction rate.
There are 4 models in our two-sided line up. The Keepsake Cameo in plush is the only one that is comfortable without needing a latex topper.
They contain zero memory foam and are not available as pillowtop models.
