Hello Pete,
We started shopping for a new mattress and would like some help.
My wife is 5'6" and 200 lbs. I am 5'11 and 180 lbs. We are both 60 years old. She currently has sore shoulders and sore hips in the morning. I used to sleep on my back and started waking with a sore lower back and now sleep 50% on my back and 50% on my side. I also wake up during the night with sore hips so I know we need a new mattress.
We shopped at the family owned furniture store that has experienced people and tried out a few styles. The Sealy Hybrid Encourage, The King Koil Magnolia - firm with Natural Latex Pillow top, and a more traditional King Koil XL250. We also tried a iMattress model but when she got close to the edge it felt like she was going to roll right off - no edge support. We also talked about looking at a Select comfort because it would allow for different settings. My wife usually sleeps warm. In the past we tried a foam top and I felt like I was suffocating and to warm. Our current mattress is a King size and we are looking for a queen size. Our current mattress is sagging badly so anything we try at the store feels good. I can sleep anywhere ( like lay on the floor), but it seems we made need more support and perhaps a firm or medium as we age. Trying them at the store for 10 minutes is very difficult to choose. Can you provide some direction for us?

Hi Emil,
You're exactly right. They all feel good when they are new. The problem you face is that most don't stay feeling good for long. And, under your wife's weight, will lose their shape and comfort quickly. The entire industry is geared to having their mattresses replaced frequently...as opposed to 10 or more years ago, when they were still making quality products.
The challenge you face will be on your wife's half of the bed. More than just her weight, is her shape. Women tend to carry a good portion of their weight around the hip area and it's there that the mattress will show its first sign of wear.
Today's one sided mattresses also contain a lot of memory foam, which adds to the reduced quality and increased initial comfort. It's the memory foam that sleeps hot.
Given your back problems and your wife's size and hip issue, your best choice is our two-sided and flippable Therapedic Keepskae Cameo in plush. It's an old fashioned made mattress using high quality components and no memory foam.
That mattress is shown here:
