Mattress Too high. Do we need the boxspring?

We recently ordered a 2" latex mattress topper and mattress cover through you. We are very happy with them and comfortable in our bed. 
The mattress we purchased was a Simmons Black Grayson Tight Top Firm and low profile box spring. 
Our problem is the whole thing is so high we can barely get into the bed.
Could we do away with the box spring and go to slats?

Hi Val,
Absolutely. The only function of the boxspring is to hold the mattress at a convenient height.
At home, we eliminated the bed frame and put the boxsprings directly on the floor.
A platform base with lots of slats and the mattress only, will work just as well.
