Simmons Plush Beautyrest Mattress, too soft, back pain.

Hi there,
I am extremely frustrated and desperate for help. I've been through 5 mattresses in the past 8 months and all of them are extremely uncomfortable and give me back pain throughout the day. I did not have this problem at all with my previous mattress I was sleeping on for one year which belonged to my friend. It was a Simmons Maxipedic Backshield Elite and was probably purchased around 1994 but was rarely slept on. Best sleep of my life. Any advice on which mattress would be comparable to this?? 
I currently have a Beautyrest classic Palm Springs plush. Provides no lower back support and there's no bounce to it. It feels like I'm laying on a pile of laundry...soft, but no give to it. Please please help! Thanks!

Hi Julie,
The Maxipedic was the low end of the Simmons line. Even so, it was hard to buy a bad bed in 1994. As you have discovered, it's hard to buy a good bed today, if you don't know what to watch out for.
The industry is selling comfort and luxury...because its the easy sell. However, in buying into that kind of sales pitch, you run into the problems you've been experiencing.
A "plush" Beautyrest uses a very thin wire for the coils, creating a greater depth of softness that is quite comfortable when trying them at a store, with disastrous results at home.
When buying a Simmons Beautyrest, you must opt for the "luxury firm" version of whatever model you're looking at, which has the same padding as the plush model, but uses a much heavier gauge wire for the proper spinal support. In other words, a good night's sleep without the back ache.
