A mattress for a big man on a budget, Simmons Beautyrest extra firm with a latex topper

Stacey writes:

Hello,
Me and my husband currently sleep on a god awful bed and are in desperate need of a new one.
I am 5'3" and 125lbs, no problems or ailments, other then back pain from our awful bed.  My husband is 6'4" and about 330lbs. The only problem he really has is occasional pain from an old shoulder injury. And we are both in our mid 20's
I want to buy the best bed for us and hope that it last sometime longer then 5 years like our current bed. The top of our price point is $1500.
I would like to know the differences between something with springs or something without. I.e. I see a lot about these gel infused memory foam mattresses. Are they going to hold up to someone like my husband? I can't seem to find any information on that and it makes me very leery of that type of bed.
Any information that you can provide to help us on our matress buying journey would be very much appreciated.
Thank you, Stacey

Hi Stacey,
Funny, my wife uses that phrase, "God awful".  This makes you the second person I've heard use it.
Your chalenges are: a very large man and a $1500 budget...for a king size, I assume, and, an industry that is more interested in what sells than what works.
The key to longevity are: strong, firm support and comfort that won't give out under his weight.
The latter is the really tricky part. The only viable solution to that problem is latex, which is the most resilient material available. You can get away with a lesser expensive mattress if it's strong and firm, if you use a softer latex topper on the surface for comfort that holds up well. But, it will take up a third of your budget.
If following this advice and if getting a king, it would best for you to get 2 Twin-XL toppers than one king. You will need the "Soft Talalay" topper to comfort someone your size. However, your husband is such a large man, that a 2" "Dunlop" topper would be prudent for his side of the bed.
Latex Mattress Topper

The topper will do much of the work of absorbing body weight and relieving that stress from the mattress.
Still, you will need a strong mattress.
It's hard to find this in stores because everybody wants to sell soft expensive mattresses. Even when you add the delivery charge, you still come in under budget with a quality product.
There's an extra firm Simmons Beautyrest that will work....and with the latex topper is right around where your budget dictates.
