Hi Jacqueline,
Your hear people talk about orthopedic mattresses all the time. When you shop, you can find the terms "ortho" and "pedic" attached to many other words and parts of words. What you don't find are orthopedic mattresses.
The term, "orthopedic" is meant to mean proper support for a health back. I'd be willing to bet, that's what most people think of when they hear that word.
It usually refers to a firm mattress.
Is that what you mean when you say you are looking for an orthopedic mattress?
Going way back to the beginning of the modern mattress, Sealy first called their mattresses, "Orthopedic" and were forced to change it, as "Orthopedic" is a medical term. Hence, "Posturepedic" was born, and many people align one with the other as meaning the same thing.
For most of the history of modern mattresses, all mattresses were firm. Actually, the choices of comfort were: "Firm", Extra Firm and Ultra Firm...up until about 30 years ago, when a study showed that the best night's sleep was had from a mattress that provides firm support with enough cushioning on the surface to facilitate a deeper, more restful night's sleep.
Since then, the industry has pushed the envelope to the point of offering mattresses that are absurdly soft. And even thought they aren't good for you to the point of causing permanent physical damage to the skeletal and muscular systems, most of the mattresses sold are these too soft beds...because we, as consumers, just love to indulge our sense of luxury.
Firm mattresses are available in every price range. You situation requires a firm bed for support and a softer surface for your fibro.
