Your blog and website have been very helpful in navigating the morass that is the mattress/sleep system industry. While most salesmen are just trying to get their commission check on the sale, the objectivity of your insight given the needs of the customer is a nice change of pace. 
I wanted to inquire as to your opinion on my situation. I'm a rather large guy (6'4, 325, former professional athlete, etc), and find myself in the market for a bed. The notion of getting what one pays for definitely seems to apply in the mattress realm, however, it also seems as though there is a tremendous amount of marketing behind more expensive sleep systems as opposed to purely enhanced construction quality and performance. 
Given my size, and the size of my significant other (6'1" female), my research has given me two potential paths to possibly take: 
1. Go with a mattress like the Simmons Black Abriana and add a latex topper to it. 
2. Go with something like the Pure Latex Bliss mattress. 
My research has helped me discover a few things:
1. Pillow tops are junk and do more of a detriment to the long term performance of the sleep system than they do help.
2. Most mattresses, even many very expensive ones, cheap out on the actual foam they use with their upper "memory foam" layers, leading to poor long term reliability and premature sagging/surface breakdown
3. Latex represents a much more reliable material than even quality, high ILD memory foam, especially in situations with larger sleepers So...given the dynamics I present with, what are your two cents?

Your assessment of the situation is pretty good.
The mattress industry, as a whole, employs many deceptive practices. Over the past 10 years, especially, the focus is on "what sells", as opposed to what's good. All the hype for memory foam is because it makes for an easy sale. Further, when the memory foam collapses under you, it will return when you get off of it...not measuring a depth sufficient for an exchange.
It is the perfect scam.
Even with the Pure Bliss, "natural" means 70% natural and 30% synthetic. You have to get the "all-natural" for all natural latex...and that price jumps.

Frankly, the Simmons Beautyrest Black Abriana with the latex topper is your best buy for a base mattress strong enough to hold a man your size. I would suggest the topper in medium, rather than soft.
