Your expense is in the size. Very few mattresses come in that size.  If he can deal with a standard full, you'd have some good choices that are reasonably priced.
The difference in cost between a good full and a good full extra long is great...considering what's available.
For instance, here are two links. The first is for an excellent value in full that will work with an adjustable base. The second is the only mattress to consider that comes in that extra long full. The others are memory foam and a total waste of money. Let me know if you have other questions.
