Hi John,
Motion transfers from one side of the bed to the other through the mattress and the boxspring.
Going to a king helps for two reasons. First, there are two boxsprings in a king and the motion transfer stops where your half of the boxspring ends. Second, you will sleep further apart in a king. The motion will reduce with the greater distance it has to travel.
Be mindful that every plus has its minus. A king tends to wear unevenly and you will be touching each other a lot less frequently.
Foam mattresses and individually pocketed coil systems provide a significant reduction in motion transfer. However, there are good and bad choices among them.
In foam mattresses, the best choice is latex over memory foam. Memory foam has the edge over latex for motion reduction, producing a more dead feel. But, memory foam wears poorly and is highly toxic. It's genuinely dangerous. Latex is natural...some are all-natural and 100% chemical free. Latex has a good degree of motion transfer reduction...and, it won't make you sick, as memory foam will. And, latex is much more resilient...longer lasting than anything else.
Individually pocketed coils are not all the same. For instance, the pockets of a Sealy or Stearns & Foster unit are sealed together near the top and bottom. In the Simmons, the pockets are sealed together nearer the center of the pocket. The Simmons coils will move more independently and give you the greatest degree of motion transfer reduction. But, you have to be careful here too. The plush models use a very thin gauge wire and don't hold up to average size people, let alone to a big man. When choosing a Simmons Beautyrest, you must stay with one of the firm models. Their Black line, using a triple strand wire in every other row of coils is among the strongest beds available and something I recommend for large people.
To get that nice balance of firm support and a comfortable sleeping surface, we recommend any of the first four models in the Simmons Beautyrest Black Series with 2" of soft Talalay latex as a topper.
We are large people, my wife and I, and have that same combination at home. My wife is a light sleeper, but I won't wake her up because I've changed positions.
Here are links to the black models and to the latex toppers.
The Ansleigh in the luxury firm is the Black model I would choose to best accommodate a large man with a much smaller woman.
