Hi Dan,
I can see just how confused you must be. The mattress you're thinking about
is everything you said you don't want. You must be listening to all that
misinformation that goes with selling that bed. Last count, there are 12,000
different mattresses available. Most are junk.
What your body requires is firm support and a comfortable sleeping surface.
It's extremely difficult to find this in any one mattress...for any decent
length of time. Memory foam is used in many mattresses. Unfortunately,
memory foam is worthless. It's worse that that. It's dangerous.
Pillowtops are extremely comfortable, but they lose their shape much too
quickly.
Avoiding these to products will eliminate the vast majority of choices, and
put you ahead of the game. And trust me, it's a game. The best way to play
the game is to keep your wits about you.
Sales pitches are designed to daze and amaze. Buzz words and phrases are
psyche based weapons that are used against you. They are meant to make these
products sound a whole lot better than they really are. In this game, you
must believe none of what you hear and half of what you see. It's a
purposefully deceitful business. If you are ready to accept that, you will
be able to avoid the pitfalls.
Keeping it simple, and thinking in more basic terms will help untie the
knots in your head.
Start off with a simple, basic innerspring mattress for the support your
body needs. There are several that will work. One of my favorites is easy to
shop and has good dollar for dollar value.
It's the starting model in the Simmons World Class line...the Annapolis Place in luxury
firm. This mattress has a more contouring firm support for good spinal
alignment and is well made.
The model name is different at every store, but the beds are, otherwise, identical.
The only padding used today that is comfortable and will keep its shape over
the years, is latex.
It's all natural and chemical free. It's been the best material available
since the 1920s with nothing ever to come along to challenge its position as
"Best". Not even close. That would be best in comfort and durability. Add a
2" layer of soft Talalay latex to that mattress and your body will have
everything it needs to sleep well for many years...which is the only point
of this exercise.
Here are the links to that mattress and the latex topper that goes with it.
