Hi Pete,
I think we need a new mattress.
I have scoliosis and our new Stearns & Foster Mattress helped at first.
But now that it’s 6 months old, I’m sinking into it and my back pain has returned.
We aren’t heavy people. I’m 130 lbs and my husband weighs 150 lbs.
I don’t understand why this has happened. We replaced our 20 year old S&F mattress with this one because our old one was so good for so long.
We recently stayed at a hotel with a Simmons Beautyrest mattress and my back pain was greatly reduced.
What mattress do you recommend for us that’s as good as our hotel mattress?
Thanks, MB
Hi MB,
S&F was purchased by Tempur-Pedic in 2013. The memory foam in your current mattress that wasn’t in your old S&F is what happened.
Memory foam is specifically designed to cause a mattress to need frequent replacing and is the worst upholstery material ever invented, despite all the sales hype you hear to the contrary.
For someone with a preexisting back problem, it’s catastrophic.
Your hotel experience might lead you to believe that a Simmons Beautyrest is your solution. It isn’t. If you buy one, you’ll be back where you are now, 6 months later.
Simmons was sold in 2016 and all of their mattresses are upholstered with the same worthless memory foam that’s in your S&F.
Since you don’t weigh very much and since your mattress is still so new, the first thing to do is to flip your mattress over.
After you flip your S&F mattress over, you could very well find yourself no longer in need of a new mattress. It happens.
Once the memory foam is on the bottom, you won’t have that sinking feeling.
If that’s the case, then all you need is a soft latex topper to make it comfortable.
The coil system type used by S&F is very much the same as in that hotel mattress.
It’s those individually pocketed coils that made the difference.
The flip side of your mattress will be quite firm, as you’ll be very close to the coils with almost no padding. Add a soft pure organic latex topper to achieve the surface comfort you need, which won’t allow you to sink.
It’s too easy to find latex imported from China.
The Chinese mix clay with the latex during processing, which lowers the price and greatly reduces the longevity of the latex foam.
Latex for Less has the lowest prices on the highest quality, pure organic latex.
3” provides a more luxurious feel than the 2”. Latex is extremely resistant.
At your body weights, 3” Soft will feel wonderful, without sacrificing the underlying firm support of the mattress…and without sinking in.
Even if you end buying a new mattress, you’ll want to start with a mattress that’s on the firm side for your scoliosis. This is the topper you’ll want to go with it.
I recommend getting the optional zipper on organic cotton cover for it, as well.

Your S&F mattress has coils in it, they are the individually pocketed coils that your scoliosis requires for pain reduction. Your sizes mitigate in your favor. That reduction in pain could very well result in pain elimination.
The mattress I’m recommending is based on your size…being all the mattress you’ll need…the PlushBeds Luxury Bliss Mattress in Medium Firm.
This mattress also uses an individually pocketed coil system, is upholstered with pure, organic latex.

It’s currently on sale and comes with a 100 night money back guarantee.
If money is no object, the PlushBeds Royal Bliss Luxury Mattress is another one to consider. When you see what’s in it, you’ll see why it’s worth so much more….not a necessity, but top of the line.

I recommend waiting a couple of days after flipping your mattress to decide what choices to make. What makes the most sense, to me, is to buy the latex topper for your flipped S&F.
Even if you later decide to buy a new mattress, you’ll use that same topper with it…so no money is wasted.
