Just Had a New Mattress Delivered with Bed Bugs.

How is delivery and pick-up done? 
I live in the NYC area and have just had a new mattress being delivered with bed bugs. 
Needless to say, I sent it back. 
Is it because old mattresses are picked up and placed on the same truck with new mattresses? Thanks, Carol

Hi Carol,
A new mattress is sealed in plastic...the edges are heat sealed. 
Bed bugs that may be in an old mattress, will not make their way from one mattress to another and get through the plastic during the few hours they ride in the same truck.
The bed bugs that come with new mattresses, is a problem created by retailers that service large cities. 
It is not a problem unique to NYC, but fairly common in many large cities.

Two sets of circumstances have created this problem.
First, is the habit of large box stores who offer same day or next day delivery. 
Consumers who are enticed by the "Immediate Gratification" of this service need to understand that in order to be able to offer this kind of delivery, everything has to be "In Stock". 
When servicing a large metropolitan area, a central warehouse location is optimal for the retailer.
Center city warehouses will also provide the retailer with cheap warehouse space. 
Warehouses are notoriously dirty places and mattresses can be stored there for weeks/months before being sold.
Second, it the totally disgusting practice of offering a comfort exchange.
The manufacturers do not participate in this type of exchange, so anything going back to the retailer cannot be returned to the factory for credit.
The less reputable retailers will simply bag the mattress and return it to stock...to be delivered to the next person who buys that make and model mattress.
The horror stories of bed bugs are just that...horrible. 
Apartment buildings can become totally infested, especially in the city.

To avoid getting a mattress delivered, complete with bed bugs, don't buy anything that has been stored or stocked.
It only takes a couple of weeks to get a freshly made mattress that comes directly from the manufacturer.
