Hi Lisa,
The choice of coil system would depend on your weight and shape. 
Choosing can be more difficult for a female than a male, simply because of all the curves of a female body.
If you are small, average, or somewhat above average in size and weight, the individually pocketed coil is better.
The individually pocketed coils contour to the shape of the body and maintain the natural alignment of the spine.
THIS, goes a long way to help relieve the pain, caused by disc related back problems.

If you are a great deal heavier, you have to consider the interlocked coil unit, just for the strength of it...but, it's less comfortable.

Another thing to consider, is quality. If a mattress has the right support and feels good, initially...but is made of poor quality materials, 
you'll be back doing this again in a year's time. 
With herniated discs, you are far more susceptible to changes a mattress goes through.
A mattress made of high quality components will change very little, as the years go by....a much better value for you dollar...and better for your back.
