In the 20 years it's been on the market, memory foam has proven itself to be the worst upholstery material ever invented.
Stories, like yours, adds to the enormity of the problem.
"Old-Fashioned" is a relative term. The modern era of mattresses began in the 1920s, when innerspring mattresses were introduced. All natural latex foam rubber mattresses were introduced at that time , as well.
For decades after, the innerspring models were upholstered with horse hair and cotton batting.
Polyurethane foam became popular in the 1970s. A two-sided innerspring mattress that is upholstered with poly foam is considered old fashioned.

If you liked the feel of an all foam mattress, going with an all natural, all latex mattress will last for decades, and with none of the negative side effects of memory foam.
