Ultra Plush S&F Latex Foam Mattress is too soft, causing back pain.

I recently purchased the Tuscan Summer Villa Ultra Plush. I have a lower back disc problem. The mattress is killing my back. I also feel the heat under my body. The salesman said latex foam doesn't heat up. Was he wrong? I have a exchange policy, should I go with a firmer pillow top or he showed me a SF Lux Estate luxury plush. What do you think? Dave
Hi Dave,
The problem is what you perceived to be comfortable, as opposed to what you back needs. Being an ultra plush, you are more encompassed by the poly foam padding...sleeping more  "in" the bed than "on" it. Sinking in to an ultra plush mattress will throw off the natural alignment of your spine, which is causing your pain. The salesman wasn't wrong about latex sleeping cool, but you aren't sleeping on latex. Your're sleeping on polyurethane, which does sleep hot. The latex is under the poly foam.
Heat may also be generated from a waterproof mattress protector...an item that many stores insist that you use for the sake of the warranty.
Pillowtops are another thing to avoid, when dealing with a disc problem. Your back requires firmer support than the mattress you bought provides.
Plush and pillowtop mattresses are easy to sell. Salespeople push them because they often result in a fast and easy close.
When you go back to re-select, pay less attention to what the salesman says and more to what your body is telling you.
A mattress is a blind item. You can't see inside and you can't rely on the salesperson to know what's right for you...or even for accurate information. Given that, you're going to have to rely on your own common sense.
If the mattress feels to good to be true, it's likely to be too soft. If you have back problems, a soft mattress will make them worse. If you don't have back problems, a soft mattress will give them to you. Listen to what your body is telling you as you try them out. Ignore the temptation to indulge your sense of luxury. That S&F mattress he showed you will end up the same...showcasing the worthlessness of the exchange policy. It doesn't help you at all, when your salesman can only guess at what's right for you. From what you've told me, it's clear that he doesn't know what he's doing.

Did you know that the stores cannot return your mattress to the factory for credit? That's right. The factories do not participate in comfort exchanges.
That means that the one you return will go back into stock...further meaning that you could easily end up with something that someone else had returned. Given that and the salesman's guessing game, it doesn't sound so good anymore. Does it?!
Another option you have is to flip the mattress over, which will put the firm latex core at the top. Add to that a 2" layer of soft latex for comfort...and by-pass the poly foam altogether.
