Choosing a Mattress for Plus Size People.

Choosing a Mattress for Plus Size People:
It always amazes me, when a 250 Lb. man calls or writes...seemingly perplexed as to why his Plush Pillowtop mattress didn't hold up.
As a heavy person, you will always be in a position of compromise...trading durability for comfort and visa versa.
Upholstered items, like mattresses and sofas, are pressure sensitive products.
The more pressure you place upon them, the sooner they will begin to show wear...and the sooner they will wear out completely.

*******************************************************************************************************************

The Bad News:
The mattress industry, as a whole and especially among the name brands, is no longer interested in making mattresses that last a long time.
Their interest is in money and profits...like so many of our other industries.
They want to sell more mattresses, more frequently, to the same people.
And, the heavier you are, the more frequently that will become.

There is one mattress component, in particular, that has allowed the industry to get away with this lowering of quality...Memory Foam.
Prior to using memory foam, poly foam was the primary upholstery material from the last 3 decades of the 20th Century.
When a sustained body impression of 1.5", or more, developed in your mattress, authorization to exchange that mattress was given.
In order to avoid the expense of giving away new mattresses, the mattresses were better made.

Just prior to the turn of the century, memory foam was introduced.
Before long, memory foam made its way into main stream mattress manufacturing.
Memory foam is, not only pressure sensitive, it is also temperature sensitive....meaning that it will soften as it absorbs the body heat you give off.
Once softened, its pressure sensitivity diminishes...causing you to sink deeper and deeper into the memory foam.
Over a matter of months after purchase, you've sunken into the memory foam to such a great degree, that your spine is no longer properly aligned...causing back pain.
Your pressure points, at the hip and shoulder, are now hitting the firmer upholstery layers under the memory foam, causing pressure point pain.
And, to add insult to injury, memory foam reflects your body heat to you, causing you to sleep hot.
And, as if all this weren't bad enough, most memory foams will off gas the toxic chemicals from which it's made.
Formaldehyde and Benzene are only two of the 61 chemicals used to manufacture memory foam.
That acrid odor is not just a bad smell. It's a health hazard that attacks your respiratory system.

All this happens, no matter how much you weigh...quicker, the more body weight you carry.

In the stores, when trying these mattresses that are loaded with memory foam, they feel fine. You test them for a few minutes...and you're fully dressed.
It's only after you get it home, and usually after the exchange period, that you realize something is wrong.
For this reason, memory foam is thee most deceptive product on the market...eliminating the value of trying before you buy.
In the stores, salespeople talk about memory foam, as though it were the best thing since sliced bread.
They do so...not because it's good for you...but because it's good for them. It's where the money is.

The truly diabolical part of memory foam is the way it returns when you get off the mattress...hence the name, "Memory Foam".
This is what keeps the consumer from prevailing in a warranty claim. The memory foam returns to it's original shape, or close enough to it, as to not meet the criteria needed for an exchange.
With no one on the mattress, it doesn't measure the sustained impression of 1.5" needed to prevail in a warranty claim, regardless of how bad the mattress is when you're on it.

Memory foam is without equal as thee absolute worst upholstery material ever invented for use in a mattress.
There are plant based memory foams, that have no toxicity. They are, still, temperature sensitive...and still, a lousy product when it comes to wear.
It has created a boon for the industry and a nightmare for the consumer.
And the heavier you are, the quicker your mattress goes bad.

The Good News:
Not all mattresses are made with memory foam...just all of the name brands, and those many other brands that are profiting from using memory foam.
A mattress is made of components. The better quality those components are, the better the mattress, and the longer it will last.
True at any body weight, as a matter of simple physics.

Coil Systems:
There are, basically, two coil systems that are worth anything...the Individually pocketed coil...and the open coil.
The Individually Pocketed Coil are pre-compressed individually wrapped barrel shaped coils that move independently from one another.
This coil unit provides contouring support that is designed to maintain the natural alignment of your spine.

The Open Coil, aka Bonnel Coil, is a much larger, much heavier hour glass shaped coil system where the coils are all tied together...providing a stiffer base support.
The pocketed coils are more comfortable. While the open coils are stronger.

Upholstery Layers:
There are three types of foams used in today's mattresses.
Memory foam, which is the lowest quality, most commonly used and the thing to avoid.
Polyurethane foam, where the quality depends on the density.
Latex foam, which is and has been thee best upholstery material since it was introduced in the 1920s.

So, for "Plus Size" people choosing the right components is key to both, the comfort and the longevity of the mattress.
