My wife and I are sleeping on an approximately 8 yr old Simmons Beautyrest Eurotop mattress.  

We are both very active (I am 6’4” 175 lbs and my wife is 5’9” 140 lbs).  I still like the mattress and find it comfortable while my wife gets hip pains sleeping on it.  

We bought a 3” memory foam topper, which she liked in the beginning, which I hated from the beginning. Now, we both hate it and cannot sleep well on it at all.  

It sleeps hot and her hip is now hurting her again. 

What would you recommend (specific mattresses, setup, etc)?  

Could we add a latex topper to this mattress, or buy a firm mattress with a soft latex topper?

These days, mattresses don't keep their shape very well...and memory foam, as you've discovered, is worthless.

A latex topper will extend the life of a mattress by absorbing much of your body weight. 

It adds extraordinary comfort that you don't sink through, as you would memory foam. And, it sleeps cool, unlike memory foam. 

From what you've told me, you only need the latex topper. It will certainly solve your wife's hip problem and that seems to be your only issue with the mattress you have.

As time goes by, and the day comes when you do need a new mattress, you'll be able to use this latex topper with it...as latex lasts for decades.
