The past 15 years has shown a dramatic shift in manufacturing, from the focus on quality to profits....as with many of our industries.
Your 15 year old pillowtop would have, 1) not been very thick & 2) filled with high density poly foam.
Your mattress is likely to also be two sided, where you can flip it, (Pillowtop on both sides). They are one sided today.
Today's pillowtops are thicker and fluffier...because, that's what sells. They are now filled with memory foam and/or a lower density poly foam...which is why they lose their shape so quickly.
This would be true of all the major brands and many others, as well.
Now, there's a couple of ways around this lowering of quality.
Over the years, we've been recommending starting with a firmer Beautyrest...luxury firm, in most cases, and adding a 2" soft Talalay Latex mattress topper...in lieu of the pillowtop.
Latex is and has always been thee very best upholstery material available....best in both, comfort and durability.
This sleep system combination is something we've sold countless times over the last 10 years...and with zero complaints to show for it.
Also, we scour the trade shows for manufacturer's that are still committed to quality.
One, in particular, is Natura of Canada. Their Greenspring line uses the same coil system as the Simmons Beautyrest, but is upholstered with all natural Talalay latex...no need to buy a separate topper...no memory foam.
Either solution will work well for you. The Natura tends to cost a little less.
